Laser hair removal vs IPL

What is the difference between Laser Hair Removal and IPL?

In today’s laser hair removal device market, we see ads for at-home laser hair removal devices when most of the devices advertised are not even laser at all! There is a mass amount of “laser” hair removal devices you see on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Most of these devices use a technology called IPL – which’s short for Intense Pulsed Light. In layman’s terms… that’s not a laser!

Tria is the only FDA-cleared at-home hair removal laser available on the market and uses the same diode laser technology used by dermatologists and laser hair removal clinics. But how do Tria’s lasers compare with those of the IPL variety, and how is laser more effective for permanent hair removal? Let’s take a deeper dive into the technology, shall we?

What is laser hair removal?

While both IPL and laser hair removal methods use light to heat the hair follicles to prevent regrowth, the technology is different due to the light source used. With laser, a pulse of focused light targets the pigment in the hair, and the energy from that light converts to heat which then disables the hair follicle underneath the skin. This process helps stop future hair growth, but it doesn’t happen overnight.

Since each hair on the body is in a different growth phase, your hair growth will need to be in the anagen hair growth phase for permanent hair removal. This is why lasering at home can take between 3 to 8 sessions or more to see results over 2 to 6 months when performed once every two weeks with Tria’s lasers. Consistency and patience is the key to achieving long-term results. If you miss a session doing laser in the areas you are targeting, you will have to wait longer to see the results you were hoping for.

Who is laser hair removal for?

Laser hair removal is not suitable for all skin tones or hair colors. Since there must be a contrast between the skin color and the hair color, the laser works best on pale to light brown skin tones with light brown to black hair color. The laser will not work on grey, blonde or red body hair. Even if you do artificial tanning, such as using a spray tan or tanning bed, you will need to wait until your tan fades before using the laser. Tria’s laser will not unlock if your skin and hair color are not suitable–this is a safety feature to keep skin from any injuries.

Another factor to take into consideration when deciding on laser hair removal is hormones. The most common reason why women grow thick facial hair is due to a hormonal disorder called PCOS. Laser will work to help control the hair growth, but it will not permanently remove it, resulting in long-term use of laser for the face.

If you are a candidate for laser hair removal, then there’s no better time than now to get started on your smooth skin journey!

What is IPL hair removal?

IPL vs Laser graphic

IPL technology, which is different from laser technology, uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths to target pigment in the hair. The energy is not as focused as a laser, as you can see in the diagram above, causing the energy to be much weaker than Tria’s diode lasers. This means you will need more treatments and will most likely see less permanent results. When it comes to safety, IPL can be concerning since the beam of light emitted covers a large area of skin surrounding the hair, increasing your chances of skin and tissue damage.

Tria's laser vs IPL

If we look at this chart here that compares Tria’s hair removal lasers with at-home IPL devices, we see that Tria uses 20 Joules (a unit of energy) and delivers 3X more energy than leading IPL hair removal devices.

Now that we’ve covered the technology portion of IPL vs. Laser, let’s talk about the machine’s body and why Tria is easier to use than an IPL device.

Tria’s lasers are cordless and do not require you to be tethered to the wall during treatments like IPL devices. You can enjoy the outdoors, lounge on the bed or couch, or use it anywhere you want! Having a cordless device also means that you can maneuver the device in a broader range of places without tangling yourself in a cord.

With Tria’s lasers, you do not have to wear protective eyewear like you do with IPL devices. No need to wear sunglasses at night while zapping away body hair!

Before you go, I’d like to go over the three P’s–the three reasons why you should opt for laser:

  • Precise – Lasers use pinpoint precision when treating each hair.
  • Power – More power means faster results.
  • Permanent – Who wants to invest time into hair removal when it is not permanent?

That’s all for today Tria Beauties; please don’t hesitate to ask us any questions regarding our hair removal devices by sending a DM to @triabeauty.

How to Rock the Natural Look (With A Little Help!) This Summer

The natural look – what does that even mean? Summer is officially here and all we want to do is deep dive into our fav summer activities that include endless amounts of rosè, brunch with our friends, lounging by the beach, and getting our summer tan on. I don’t know about you, but there’s something about being tan and sun kissed that makes me feel like I can conquer the world. Is it that every part of our body looks more toned when we’re tan? Or maybe because we feel like we need less makeup when we’re tan because our skin seems to naturally glow and cover up blemishes??

But let’s be real. We love our skin too much and read too many articles about the negative effects of baking in the sun. So, how can we make a compromise? We want this effortless, summer chic look but where do we start? We’ve heard it everywhere…”natural beauty”, “makeup free”, “look flawless always”, “easy as 1,2, 3” but stepping into summer in our most confidence skin sounds way easier than it actually is!

Sometimes it’s way harder than just rolling out bed, running a brush through our hair and strutting into the day with minimal effort…but still looking like a runway model.

Let’s focus on our skin for now and take a look at our current situation.

Expectation for Summer: Flawless clear complexion, sculpted brows, luscious eyelashes, smooth skin, even tan all over

Reality For Summer:  Frizzy hair due to unbearable humidity, makeup melting off our face as we run to make the subway (again!), tiny pimples popping up every day from constantly being sweaty, shorts tan

So, how do we rock this natural look with the most minimal effort while still feeling good?!

Firstly,  I feel like we should also take into account that it will absolutely take makeup for some of us to  to rock the natural “no makeup” look. It’s not hypocritical, it’s just fact.

For that sun kissed, even skin tone…

Instead of slapping on your thick foundation this summer, opt for a tinted moisturizer with SPF. Our fav, the Philosophy’s Renewed Hope In A Jar Skin Tint with 20 SPF that’ll leave you protected & looking fresh.

To combat your humid frizzy hair…

Try sleeping on a silk pillowcase. We love it because it works to smooth our skin and calm our crazy morning hair.

To get the glossy lips and sculpted brows…

We have two major favs that won’t break the bank but will make you the envy of natural beauties everywhere. Aquaphor Lip Repair can be purchased at your local pharmacy and gives just enough gloss + shine to get you noticed.  Glossier Boy Brow comes in 4 different shades, including clear. PSA: Ladies, if you weren’t sculpting your brows before, you better get on it ASAP as you’ll be blown away by how much more put together you look. Even better, this doesn’t sweat off your brows so you can have those stylin’ brows in the gym too!

For those annoying pimples that pop up overnight….

We love this acne system that not only cleanses our skin, but uses a gentle blue light to literally kill off the acne causing bacteria. And it’s compact so we take it with us on all our summer adventures.

For smooth armpits and bikini lines…

We really forget how quickly our hair grows until we are lounging poolside and have that “Oh no” moment when you realize you forgot your weekly lady upkeep. For this, look no further than at-home hair removal. All you do is treat the desired area for a few weeks and your hair follicles will be disabled and you’ll never have to worry again about forgetting to shave pre-pool party.

Summer Skincare Swaps For Glowing, Healthy Skin

Summer Skincare Swaps For Glowing, Healthy Skin

Summer is here and we are feeling the heat! The sweaters have all been packed away and slowly replaced by sandals and sundresses, pedicures are once again a monthly—nay weekly—necessity. But there are other important, yet often overlooked changes that should occur, but don’t. We’re talking about your skincare. Think your creamy, ultra-hydrating night cream is a necessity in the summer? Think again. And how do you plan to deal with the inevitable moisture and makeup buildup that accumulates on your face on those particularly hot, sticky summer days? We’ve got you covered—read on to find out which skincare swaps you need to make as we head our way into summer!

Consider Breaking Up With Your Razor Forever

You are never, ever, ever getting back together with your razor after this summer. Try at home hair removal this season to guarantee smooth, silky skin all year round without the hassle of shaving, waxing or epilating ever again. Not sure where to start? Check out our Hair Removal Lasers to see what device works best for you.

Swap Your Moisturizer For Something Lighter

Unless you live in a literal year-round beach paradise, we’re guessing that you use a thicker, creamier moisturizer to give your skin an extra dose of hydration in the cold winter months. But with climbing temperatures and intense humidity, your skin will start retaining more moisture, meaning that your favorite wintertime moisturizer will leave you feeling swampy—not chic. Instead, opt for a lightweight hyaluronic acid based moisturizer, which will absorb into the skin without leaving an oily sheen.

Say Goodbye To Your Foundation

Remember that bit about your skin retaining more moisture in the summer? The same thing applies with your foundation. Come June and July, your go-to cream and liquid foundations will buildup and cause breakouts. Tinted moisturizer or a lightweight powder foundation will feel much fresher—your skin will thank you.

Stock Up On SPF

Would this be a summer skincare blog without a single mention of sunscreen? A critical step to any skincare routine year-round, sunscreen is particularly important during the summer months when the sun is at its peak strength. Apply generously to your face, neck, hands and any other area of skin that will be exposed during the day.

Give Yourself A Harm-Free Glow

There is nothing more coveted than that “I-Just-Got-Back-From-Vacation” sun-kissed glow, but sunbathing comes at a price. Rather than risk skin cancer and accelerated aging, treat yourself to a gorgeous glow using one of the many self-tanning products on the market. Apply lightly and regularly for a gradual—and natural!—transition that will make you the envy of the office.

Hair Removal for Dark Skin: Why It Works

Hair Removal for Dark Skin: Why It Works

Up until now, the advances of at-home hair removal technology have failed to deliver on safe hair removal for dark skin. There are hair removal devices that are safe and effective for pale to tan skin tones, like Tria’s 4X Hair Removal Laser. But, those with darker skin tones have not had access to at-home hair removal until the development of IPL, also known as Intense Pulsed Light. Let’s take a deeper look into IPL combined with RF technology and how it works on darker skin tones, and for those who are curious about laser, we will talk more about how that works and what skin tones and hair colors it will work for.

How Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Radio Frequency (RF) Technology Works

How does IPL + RF technology work for effective hair removal on dark skinned beauties?! This technology is safe for usage on dark skin because it brings together Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Radio Frequency (RF) energies. These groundbreaking technologies use the intense pulsed light (IPL) to target and warm the melanin in hair follicles. Once follicles are warmed up, it applies radio frequency pulses (RF). RF seeks out these warmed follicles and delivers a second round of growth reducing energy. The combination of IPL and RF can deliver hair removal for the widest variety of hair colors and skin tones, up to Fitzpatrick VI – with impressive results.

Which IPL device should you choose? Do your research, read reviews, and ask on your social channels. There is an extensive guide to IPL for dark and black skin on WeAreBodyBeautiful.com which covers at-home devices for skin tones IV to VI on the Fitzpatrick chart.

Laser Hair Removal –Who does it work for?

There are differences in the technology between IPL and Laser Hair Removal, and there are reasons why laser will not work on darker skin tones. Tria’s at-home device 4X Hair Removal Laser effectively targets the pigment in the hair, without touching the surrounding skin. Your hair pigment, called melanin, is what gives your hair its unique color. Every hair follicle—a tube-shaped sac—contains melanin. This hair follicle is also responsible for hair growth. The laser must be able to find the melanin in the hair in order to disable the hair follicle. If the hair is too light, or if the skin is darker than light brown, the laser is unable to target each individual hair.

Once the device identifies the hair melanin (differentiating it from the melanin in the skin by color), it sends highly-concentrated light through it. The light is converted into heat, which disables the hair follicle.

See the skin tone and hair color chart below to see if you are a candidate for laser hair removal:

Now that you know the differences between IPL and Laser hair removal technologies and the way they each work with different skin tones, hopefully you will be able to decide which will work best for you!
