TSA travel rules for beauty products

TSA-Friendly Beauty Essentials For Summer Travel

Planning what beauty products to take on a big summer trip can be as much of a nightmare as trying on bathing suits in a florescent-lighted dressing room. TSA’s rules state that you can only bring liquid or gel-like items in your carry on bag if they are 3.4 ounces or less and placed in a quart-sized plastic bag. These rules can be hard to remember and a pain to plan for during the chaos of packing.

Just relax! You’re in luck! We are here to help you pack for your trip with some suggestions on beauty items that are must-haves for your summer getaway.

Traveling on a plane with liquids & gels

Your hairspray, foundation, and shampoos all fall into the ‘liquids and gels’ category. All of these items need to be under 3.4 ounces and placed carefully inside of a quart-size zipped plastic bags, such as Ziploc bags or a clear TSA-approved toiletry bags. For instance, if your spray tan bottle is larger than 3.4 ounces, all you need to do is place that inside of your checked luggage.

If you don’t need your entire bottle of shampoo for a trip, you can purchase travel-sized bottles and pour the liquid into them to carry on the plane or to store in your luggage.

Traveler Tip: I purchased all of my toiletries ahead of time and had them shipped to my hotel. I called to make sure they would secure the items for me, and they did! Each hotel can vary, so always call to make sure they’ll take care of your items.

Can I bring makeup on the plane?

Can I bring makeup on a plane?
I think we’ve all been that girl who does their face on public transportation before they reach their destination. There are a few rules for bringing makeup on a plane. Mascara, foundation, liquid highlighters and lip gloss items will go into that lovely quart-sized plastic bag we talked about earlier. Fortunately, your lipsticks, lip balms, lip liners, eyeliners (think solid and waxy products) and compact powders can be carried on the plane with no issues. Yup, makeup brushes are all fine to bring aboard!

Listen up! There is a little caveat with bringing large powder products on the plane. The new TSA powder rule states that any powder-like substances over 12 ounces could be subject to further screening. If you are planning to carry THAT much setting powder on the plane, you need to be prepared! Twelve ounces of setting powder would equal to twelve Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powders. I know I get oily during a flight, but I’m pretty sure you would only need just one jar.

How to Avoid Dehydration on a Plane

Dehydration can worsen not only jet lag, but also take a toll on your skin. At home, your humidity levels can fall between 40 to 70 percent–on a flight, that level drops down to 20 percent. There are a couple of things you can do to combat dehydration: Stay away from caffeine and alcohol, and drink electrolytes to keep your hydration levels up. Want to look refreshed like you’ve just had a pro facial when stepping off of the plane?  Nuvesse’s serum-infused masks and rollerball are packed full of hyaluronic acid and aloe vera to plump up and brighten dry skin while coasting at 35,000 feet.

Don’t forget—this fragrance may bring back memories (good and bad!) of your trip, so choose wisely!

Is nail care okay to bring on a plane?

Can I bring a nail file on a plane?

You can definitely bring a nail file—but just to be safe, leave the metal ones at home or in your checked in luggage. Same with nail clippers—just leave those in your luggage. You may be surprised to learn that tweezers are okay to bring on the plane!

When it comes to nail polish, you have to follow the rules and put it in the quart-sized plastic bag with your other liquids—but please do not paint your nails on the plane! The vapor would fill the entire cabin and it’s not polite.

Healthy skincare new year's resolutions

2019 New Year’s Resolution: Skincare Edition

It’s been said that over 40% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, but only 8% actually keep them! Let’s make 2019 the year you make them and actually KEEP them, but it’s all about choosing resolutions that are right for YOU and right for your skin. They need to be very specific and not just “I want to be healthier in 2019.” Nail down that nightly skincare routine. Start wearing SPF – every day. Just to name a few!

We have our top 5 Resolutions we believe that will make a difference in your skin in 2019 (and they’re simple!):

Drink 8 glasses of water a day.

There are even water bottles that have a schedule on them to remind you to drink from your water bottle! Keep this resolution and watch your skin change from the inside out. Drinking water to keep you skin hydrated is better than any topical on the planet!

Wash your face!

Every morning and every night. Healthy skin always starts with CLEAN skin. When you fall asleep with a face full of makeup, you’re putting your skin at all sorts of risks – clogged pores, blemishes, and aging. All it takes is a couple of minutes before your head hits the pillow! Which reminds us – you should be sleeping on copper.

Mask 1x a week.

Even schedule it – pick a day of the week and stick to it. Think of it as a treat – no, more than that! It’s self-care. Take 30 minutes of your week to hit pause and replenish and hydrate your skin. Yes, of course, you can multitask, but sometimes you just need a break. Apply your face mask, sip on Spearmint Tea, and get to that book or magazine article you’ve been meaning to read. Doesn’t sound like too difficult a resolution to keep, does it? 😉

Stop picking at your face!

We know, this one can be difficult. Everyone, and we mean everyone, has succumbed to the temptation of popping a blemish, but it actually is doing more harm than good. You could end up damaging your skin and you’re more likely to see acne scars as a result. Instead, opt for a spot treatment like this one and blue light it! Safe, effective, and by far the best way to clear your blemishes to reveal flawless skin in 2019.

Throw your razors away – for good.

Think of all the time, energy, and pain you could save by not having to shave or wax! Our Hair Removal Laser 4X Deluxe Kit is powered by the same in-office Laser Technology used by dermatologists to remove unwanted hair at a fraction of the typical laser treatment cost. Start seeing results in as little as 2 weeks and reveal glowing, hair-free skin by summer!

Updating Your Skincare for Fall

One thing that drives us crazy about skincare is that it’s always focusing on “what’s your skin type?” To which you respond: Oily, A Little Oily (but, just in the T-Zone!), Combination (Whatever that means? Normal?), Dry, Extra Dry. But that’s not the only thing that should play a role in your skincare purchases. You need to take into account your climate, the weather, and most importantly the changing of seasons

Think about it.

Everyone rotates their clothing with the changing of seasons. Think of your medicine cabinet as your closet – and every closet needs a season “refresh”! Even the slights adjustments to your skincare routines will make a difference in how your skin looks and feels.

With Autumn fast approaching (hello, PSL!), dry, cooler air is just around the corner. This, in addition to the drop in humidity levels, causes skin to lose moisture, resulting in skin irritation, chapped lips, and dry, flaky skin.

So what do we do?

Change up your Moisturizer.

Moisturize, moisturize, MOISTURIZE. Moisturizing is not only important during any season, it’s that much more important during Autumn. During the Summer months, we, of course, recommend a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. Unfortunately that’s just not going to cut it in the Fall. Slather on (face AND neck) a heavier, thicker moisturizing cream. Better yet, choose one with ceramides that form a protective layer that plumps the skin and retains moisture.

Apply Sunscreen.

Just because you can’t FEEL the heat from the sun doesn’t negate the fact that the sun is still shining. If you live in a colder climate where you see snow, the sun is even harsher, reflecting off the snow. Dermatologists recommend wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, blocking 97% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays.

Lay off the Exfoliation.

But not entirely. Gently exfoliating once a week during the colder months helps remove any dry, flaky skin. Over exfoliating can often result in stripping the skin of any moisture and essential oils, leading to breakouts in the dry, colder months. So again, opt for something on the gentler side. And hey, don’t forget to exfoliate those lips too!

Use a Hydrating Serum.

That is, if you don’t already! Apply a Hydrating Serum every night as a part of your nightly routine. Select a hydrating serum that lists Hyaluronic Acid as one of it’s main ingredients. In fact, our Deep Hydrating & Brightening Serum is packed with nourishing Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, and Aloe Vera to soothe and enhance your skin’s moisture balance. It’s as if it was made for the colder months. 😉 Our Deep Hydrating & Brightening Serum is also available in mask-form to deliver 1 full ounce of serum into the skin within 30 minutes(!). One question we often get asked is when to apply serum in your skincare product line-up. We recommend applying serum after cleansing your skin and before layering on your moisturizer. We even recommend going to bed feeling a little “greasy” and “over-hydrated” as your skin loses moisture FAST while you sleep.

Most importantly, pay extra attention to how your skin reacts to the change in weather and adjust your skin care routine to what YOUR skin NEEDS. Your skin is just as unique as YOU are.

Summer Skincare Swaps For Glowing, Healthy Skin

Summer Skincare Swaps For Glowing, Healthy Skin

Summer is here and we are feeling the heat! The sweaters have all been packed away and slowly replaced by sandals and sundresses, pedicures are once again a monthly—nay weekly—necessity. But there are other important, yet often overlooked changes that should occur, but don’t. We’re talking about your skincare. Think your creamy, ultra-hydrating night cream is a necessity in the summer? Think again. And how do you plan to deal with the inevitable moisture and makeup buildup that accumulates on your face on those particularly hot, sticky summer days? We’ve got you covered—read on to find out which skincare swaps you need to make as we head our way into summer!

Consider Breaking Up With Your Razor Forever

You are never, ever, ever getting back together with your razor after this summer. Try at home hair removal this season to guarantee smooth, silky skin all year round without the hassle of shaving, waxing or epilating ever again. Not sure where to start? Check out our Hair Removal Lasers to see what device works best for you.

Swap Your Moisturizer For Something Lighter

Unless you live in a literal year-round beach paradise, we’re guessing that you use a thicker, creamier moisturizer to give your skin an extra dose of hydration in the cold winter months. But with climbing temperatures and intense humidity, your skin will start retaining more moisture, meaning that your favorite wintertime moisturizer will leave you feeling swampy—not chic. Instead, opt for a lightweight hyaluronic acid based moisturizer, which will absorb into the skin without leaving an oily sheen.

Say Goodbye To Your Foundation

Remember that bit about your skin retaining more moisture in the summer? The same thing applies with your foundation. Come June and July, your go-to cream and liquid foundations will buildup and cause breakouts. Tinted moisturizer or a lightweight powder foundation will feel much fresher—your skin will thank you.

Stock Up On SPF

Would this be a summer skincare blog without a single mention of sunscreen? A critical step to any skincare routine year-round, sunscreen is particularly important during the summer months when the sun is at its peak strength. Apply generously to your face, neck, hands and any other area of skin that will be exposed during the day.

Give Yourself A Harm-Free Glow

There is nothing more coveted than that “I-Just-Got-Back-From-Vacation” sun-kissed glow, but sunbathing comes at a price. Rather than risk skin cancer and accelerated aging, treat yourself to a gorgeous glow using one of the many self-tanning products on the market. Apply lightly and regularly for a gradual—and natural!—transition that will make you the envy of the office.

Happy National Sunscreen Day!

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has officially declared the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, “National Sunscreen Day.” Although there are a million and one reasons to celebrate the sun, on Friday we spread awareness about its potential danger and we get smart about managing the sun.

So let’s talk about sun damage for a bit and then go into how we can take preventative measures. As beauty lovers, we are obsessed about the health and vitality of our skin. Sun damage is one of the main causes of premature aging. It can actually compound the aging process. Ultraviolet light from the sun penetrates all the layers of skin, including the layers that actively work to produce collagen to fortify your skin. This leads to decreased elasticity, sagginess and wrinkles (gasp!) Also, that bright red lobster look that you can get from a fresh sunburn has never been flattering. And what about the hyperpigmentation or potentially dangerous moles that often make an unwelcome appearance after frequent sun exposure? No thank you.

The most unfortunate potential consequence of sun overexposure is skin cancer. In the U.S. alone, there are 5.4 million cases reported per year. There are more skin cancer cases than breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer combined!

Still not convinced? Do you need a visual? Dr. Sandra Lee (a.k.a.) Dr. Pimplepopper shared this man’s photo on Instagram:

She engagingly asked her fans if they could guess his occupation, the obvious answer being a truck driver. The photo shows the drastic difference in skin texture between the frequently sunned left side of his face and the shaded right side.

But on a more positive note, let’s talk about what you CAN do to stay safe in the sun.

Avoid the Sun!

When possible, you can protect yourself from the sun by avoiding it all together. Try to stay covered indoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Gear Up!

When you must go outside, wear a hat and sunglasses. Skin-protective clothing act as an extra barrier from those harmful rays. Cover up your arms with long sleeves and wear long pants. This is especially important when you anticipate being outside for an extended period of time.

Slather on that SPF!

For those times you want to go outside and show some skin, be sure to protect it with sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher that specifically says “broad-spectrum” on the label (which means it protects against UVA and UVB rays). Also make sure that your sunscreen is water resistant. It’s best to wear sunscreen every day, all year long. Harmful rays don’t go away just because it’s cloudy and gray outside. It’s ideal to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Remember that photo that Dr. Lee shared? Apply sunscreen even if you’ll be in the car driving all day. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours while the sun is out to keep that SPF factor fresh and actively working to protect your precious skin.

And of course don’t forget to stay hydrated! Drink lots of water!
