Best makeup of 2019

15 best beauty favorites of 2019

Every year, I release my “best of” beauty favorites list, and this year I found some pretty wonderful things! I’ve been working in various facets of the makeup industry for 19 years, and I’ve tried my fair share of foundations and shampoos over the years. As formulations improve and customer demands get stronger, thanks to the force of social media, beauty product quality and diversity are at an all-time high. What a lovely time it was in 2019 to watch the industry grow.

As we near the end of the decade, I reflect upon things like the baskets of foundations I tried until I found the perfect ones that would perfect my crazy complexion issues. I think about all of the eyebrow trends and how I bought hundreds of pencils, pomades and eyebrow tints to try to perfect a flawless brow. Let’s reel it in and make this post all about 2019–because this year rocked!

Best Makeup ToolsBest Beauty Tools 2019

Real Techniques Miracle Powder Sponge $5.99 and Brush Crush Foundation Brush $8.99

Every artist needs a good set of tools–but you don’t have to spend a fortune to own a great set! I’ve been a huge fan of the brand Real Techniques (founded by Sam and Nic Chapman of YouTube beauty guru status) because of the affordability and the quality. My latest discoveries are the Miracle Powder Sponge and the Brush Crush Foundation Brush.

The powder sponge is the best sponge I’ve found to date for setting your face flawlessly, using either loose or pressed powder. The velvety material used in the design works to pick up more product than a traditional sponge, making it the best tool for setting your under-eye area with powder, and for baking your face.

The Brush Crush foundation brush really surprised me. I am used to using a sponge primarily for applying foundation, but this one stood out to me for the bold design. I bought it on a whim and was happy to see that my full coverage foundation blended seamlessly and without streaking. As always, Real Techniques brushes are synthetic and no animals were harmed!

Best Foundation and Concealer

Best Foundation and Concealer 2019

Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Foundation $20 and Huda Beauty The Overachiever High Coverage Concealer $30

My skin is oily and troublesome–I break out easily and I’m sensitive. Finding the perfect foundation formula and color match is a tough combination. Just recently, I ran across the Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Foundation at Ulta and decided to give it a whirl. There are 42 shades to choose from, starting from darkest to lightest. I definitely found my shade AND the perfect full-coverage formula! The product is thick, but all you need is a small dab to make it work. The coverage is flawless, beautiful and long-lasting!

As you can tell, I am a fan of full coverage. What’s great about full-coverage is that you can use less on a damp blending sponge to create a sheer look. The best concealer I’ve tried this year is the Huda Beauty Overachiever High Coverage Concealer. It is not too watery and not too thick. The consistency is perfect for blending under the eyes and creates a very flawless finish. I normally use a damp sponge to blend this in with a dabbing of loose powder on top to set for the day.

Best Serum and Moisturizer

Best Face Serum and Moisturizer

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% $5.90 and Tria Super C Brightening Moisturizer $36 until 1/3 (Reg. price $60)

We all have different needs for our skin, but I think we all have a common goal: to have brighter, glowing, balanced skin. For me personally, I have dry and oily skin, which is an annoying combo! Along with that, I have to manage my large pores and any type of dead skin cells that get caught into those pores to cause nasty blackheads.

The Ordinary makes a serum that contains niacinamide (aka vitamin B), which can help fade everything from uneven skin tone blotches to help heal acne. It is labeled as being for all skin types, although I find that it does help reduce oils for the slick-skinned sisters like myself.

For those who use our SmoothBeauty Laser for the face, the Super C Brightening Moisturizer is an oil-based form of vitamin C, which has skin brightening properties. I love the way this feels after doing my laser treatments, and it helps keep the skin supple while I sleep. When you awake, your skin is glowing and ready for the day! The hyaluronic acid will help your skin retain its moisture, so you will love this formula if you experience dryness from the laser treatments.

Best Makeup Picks

Best makeup of 2019

So much makeup, so little time! I spend a lot of money on cosmetics every year to review for my blogs, and of course, a lot of those products turn out to be duds. I found a few stand out products this year in the color cosmetics realm–some are drugstore and some are luxury products–but they all performed magical things!

My first mention was a gift from a friend. The KKW (Kim Kardashian-West) Beauty Blossom Palette ($45) is a high-quality eyeshadow palette with an array of very wearable shades. The neutral choices are both matte and shimmery, and you can amp up the look using the darker plum and cranberry shades for a quick nighttime look. The cardboard palette design makes it easy for travel.

I am a huge fan of long-wear lipstick and the Rimmel Provocalips ($8.29) line is my first choice when searching for a lipstick for going out or for a long day at work. The satin gloss that is provided at the other end of the tube is a great choice for those that don’t want their lips to look overly glossy. It’s just the right amount of shine and moisture.

A good mascara is sometimes hard to find, am I right? Once in a while, I’ll find a super great mascara, and then it’s discontinued or there is something different about the formula later on. So frustrating. A little secret that I’ve learned in the business and from trial and error is that luxury mascaras, as expensive as they are, last longer than drugstore options due to better formulas. Most of my drugstore choices have dried up within a few weeks and don’t perform as well, while my department store collection still stays consistent for several months. One mascara that I fell in love with this year is the YSL The Shock mascara ($29). This is the most volumizing one of YSL’s collection and that’s no lie! The brush applies the right amount of product while it combs and coats your lashes for amazing thickness and volume.

Another luxury pick that I have been in love with is the amazing formula of the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush ($40). The unique design of the product allows you to apply the outer ring color to your cheek area, and the “pop” middle color to the center of your cheek for a dimensional look. I like the formula because it’s a very finely milled powder that looks smooth on the skin. Beware of the compact’s packaging when traveling, it is very thin and delicate!

Best Shampoo and ConditionerBest Shampoo and Conditioner

Biolage Colorlast Shampoo $28 for 33.8 oz. and Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner $28 for 8.5 oz.

I often have to dye my hair–due to grays and because I prefer my hair to be a deep black shade. Finding a shampoo that won’t fade my color is pretty tough, even when the label says it’s safe for color-treated hair. I found Biolage Colorlast Shampoo to be one of the best shampoos I’ve found in decades. I don’t see a lot of color going down the drain during wash, but it also does an amazing job at cleaning my hair and scalp. No residue left behind!

As for the conditioner, I like to experiment. I have had Olaplex treatments done at my salon, but I did not know you can start purchasing their products to take home! I snatched up the Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner, which helps tame frizz and makes my hair strong and healthy. You can find this product now at Ulta and Sephora. Tip: You only need to use a tiny bit of this! If you use too much, your hair is weighed down and greasy. Try to concentrate on the dry areas.

Best Beauty Tech

Best Beauty Technology

Tria SmoothBeauty Laser for the Face with Copper-Infused Sleeping Mask $376 through 1/3 (Reg. price $442) and Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer $59.99 and BlendSmart Foundation Brush $69

I’m obviously fascinated with beauty technology, and I love seeing what the latest trends are in hair, makeup, and anti-aging tech. As always, I’ve been a huge Tria fan, with my first product being the SmoothBeauty Laser for the face. I love the way my skin looks when I wake up in the morning–fresh, plumped, and young. At 43, I am mistaken for someone in their late 20s, early 30s. I can thank genetics for playing a part, but the laser really helps tune-up my skin to look its best for my age.

I spoke about my favorite hair products earlier, and when it comes to drying my hair, I cannot use a traditional hairdryer. My hair’s texture is thick and frizzy with no shine and basically unmanageable unless I use a hot tool on it. I discovered the Revlon Volumizer through a friend and I haven’t put it down since. It gives you that salon look that your stylist gives you when they use that big round brush and hairdryer on full blast. It’s pretty easy to use and doesn’t hurt your wrist while you are styling. When I’m finished, my hair looks shiny, smooth and the frizz is totally gone.

I mentioned my favorite foundation brush at the beginning of the blog post, but I also love to use the BlendSmart Foundation Brush with foundation, but mostly for use with my contour colors. The rotating brush design quickly applies and blends with an airbrush finish, and works especially well with deep contour colors that are hard to blend with a traditional brush. Plus, it’s fun to use!

Well, there you have it! My list is complete for the year 2019! Are we ready for a new decade of beauty yet?

Holiday gift guide 2019

We’ve all got that one friend or family member that seems to have the “gift” for gifting. They know what you really need before you’ve thought about it. That type of gift-giver is a rare find, and you probably feel awkward when trying to find them a gift during the holidays. Perhaps you’re even stressed about gifts this year, but you still want to find something impressive. I’ve been gathering my notes from holidays past and found some unique and trendy gifts that seemed to be a smash hit with my female friends and family members.

These awesome items include beauty gifts, fashion finds, and home decor–something for everyone! Sit back and relax, and start making your gift lists with items that will “wow” them.

Kylie Cosmetics Holiday Lip Set $36Kylie Holiday Lip Kit 2019

There’s a valid reason why Kylie Cosmetics is so successful–the lip kits are amazing. I’ve been a fan for several years, with an entire drawer dedicated to my Kylie Lip Kit collection. This kit includes the Coconut Lip Liner, Kylie Matte Liquid Lipstick and a Clear Gloss.

My favorite part of the kits is that the butterscotch-scented lipstick is like a dream to apply, especially after applying the creamy lip liner. I usually have no issues drinking coffee or eating while wearing the matte formula, and it doesn’t dry out your lips. Perfect stocking stuffer gift for your beauty-loving friends!

DYSON Supersonic Hair Dryer Gift Edition with Red Case
$399

Dyson Hair Dryer Gift Set
When my hairstylist pulled out this Dyson dryer and used it on my hair, I was extremely impressed. There was a lot of power, but my hair didn’t turn out like a frizzy mess like it does at home with my $50 dryer. The dryer was designed to dry and smooth hair without causing heat damage and add shine up to 132%!

Made for straight, wavy, curly or coily hair for all textures, this is the perfect gift for your sister or maybe your brother with the long hair! I have several family members that love this product and did notice that the dryer made it safely overseas on our vacation trip in the beautiful case that it comes with. Can someone please send this article to my husband as a hint?

There is a fragrance I always gravitate towards in my perfume collection–Flowerbomb. This warm and spicy fragrance has notes of Jasmine, Orange Blossom, and Patchouli. All it takes is a tiny bit of this scent to do the trick as it is highly concentrated. This is a perfect gift for the BFF or sister-in-law as this fragrance will reflect her fun personality.

This set comes with a shower gel and body lotion to help the fragrance’s scent linger on longer!

Johnny Was Joanna Silk Scarf $68Johnny Was Joanna Silk Scarf

You can never go wrong with a beautiful silk scarf that can dress up a plain t-shirt. This gorgeous floral pattern design scarf is perfect for anyone looking to spiff up an outfit on the way out of the door. The tassels help keep the scarf in place by adding a little extra weight to the bottom.

Your creative mom or sister would love working this square-shaped scarf to create different styles and ways to wear it.

Custom Paw Print Ring $29

Custom Paw Print Ring from Etsy

Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend probably didn’t own a dog (or cat). This next gift on the list is highly personalized, so it may be tricky to give it as a gift, but perhaps you can work with a roommate or spouse of the gift recipient to make things happen.

This custom paw print ring is available in rose gold, gold, and silver finishes and requires a scan or photograph of the animal’s paw print to be sent over to the Etsy store owner. This is definitely the perfect gift for any pet lover on your list!

Luxe Glass Pillar Holder $40.99

Sometimes candles are the gift you really don’t want to give, but you can’t think of anything else! Perhaps your gift recipient has a ton of candles, but nothing nice to put them in. I am a big fan of the ZGallerie store and I found this pure glass light-reflective candle holder that would look stunning at night holding a 3-inch (diameter) pillar candle. The holder measures 4.75″ in diameter x 9.5″H. The candle holder already comes with a gift box, so all you need to do is provide a card.

Tria Beauty Boosting Eye Mask Kit (Now $186 through 12/1)

Beauty Boosting Eye Mask Kit
If you hear a constant stream of comments from your friends or family members about how much they can’t stand their crow’s feet or fine lines around the eyes, the Beauty Boosting Eye Mask Kit is going to be an unforgettable gift! This palm-sized laser packs a powerful fractional laser to stimulate collagen, helping to diminish those pesky signs of aging.

The kit includes the best sleeping mask I’ve ever put on my face! The plush and luxurious mask keeps the light out while the copper-infused material helps keep the skin around your eyes looking fresh and rejuvenated.

These coffee mugs aren’t just any old mug, they’re personalized with a gorgeously gilded initial among a garden of beautifully illustrated flowers. Keep in mind that these mugs cannot be microwaved due to the metallic detail. This is perfect for your tea-obsessed friend or your boss that is always carrying a mug at the office.

Totally Bamboo Destination Cutting Board CollectionI saw these cool cutting boards going around at several gift opening occasions and they were always a smash hit. These state-themed cutting boards make great gifts for just about anyone who entertains or the couples that love to cook. Also, if you need a gift for your secret Santa gift exchange, these are under $30! Oh, and they’re made of natural bamboo!

Ted Baker Crystal Bobble Matinee Purse $149Ted Baker Crystal Bobble Matinee Purse

My favorite wallet of all-time, the Ted Baker Solange wallet is definitely a gift for your fashionista friend who loves a bit of glam. The diamond bobble clasp at the top of the wallet is definitely the attention-grabbing part of the wallet that gives it charm.

Made in pure leather, this wallet includes 12 card slots with plenty of room for cash and coins. I get so many compliments on mine, and fortunately, there are several colors to choose from.

Tria Nourishing & Firming Deluxe Kit (Now $111, 40% off until 12/1)Nourishing & Firming Deluxe Kit

Fall beauty and fashion 2019

Fall fashion and beauty obsessions

Do you love the seasonal shift from summer to fall? I’ve finally tucked away my coral and pink frocks and have resurfaced my fall favorites: oversized sweaters and sherpa-lined boots are among my seasonal staples. As much as I love my closet’s classics, I have a major itch to go shopping for new styles and hues. I’ve perused the interwebs for fall fashion and beauty products that I am completely obsessed with. I think you will be, too!

From affordable handbags to a shimmering body lotion by Rihanna, read on to see what’s hot!

Designer-Inspired Handbags

Target Everyday Essentials Saddle Crossbody Bag - A New Day in BurgundyLooking at this bag, it is hard to believe it is not from an expensive designer collection. Can you believe that this is from Target? Behold your favorite faux leather bag of the season, the Everyday Essentials Saddle Crossbody Bag – A New Day in Burgundy.

This gorgeous burgundy shade is the perfect color for fall and winter and is just the right size to use every day. For just $30, this bag will garner many compliments. I feel like this bag will sell out soon, do you get that feeling, too?

Aldo Legoiri Tote Bag with Faux Snake Skin

Snakeskin designs are really big this season, but it is too easy to go “cheesy” if you wear too much of it. If you love the print, but don’t want to go too bold, opt for a tote like this Legoiri Tote Bag with Faux Snake Skin from Aldo. The neutral browns in the bag won’t clash with your attire, and with the gold hardware accents, it adds a touch of class. This bag also won’t break the bank coming in at just $55.

Sweaters & Turtlenecks

H&M Knit Wool-blend Sweater in Beige Melange

There’s nothing better than the perfect cozy sweater. Sweater weather is in full force across the map, and I’m sure this H&M Knit Wool-blend Sweater in Beige Melange is flying off the shelves. This v-neck sweater will look perfect with a simple pair of jeans and boots. If this soft beige color isn’t your forte, you will be glad to know the same sweater is also available in green, pink and dark beige. Get yours at H&M for $69.99.

H&M Modal Turtleneck TopVery recently, I had a conversation with my 83-year-old uncle about the awesomeness of turtlenecks. As far as we knew, they remained out of fashion–until now. This sleek and updated version of the turtleneck is a refreshing sight to see! You also won’t believe the price: $9.99! The H&M Modal Turtleneck Top is so reasonable in price, you can be sure these will disappear soon. Just to note, the floral print is on top of a dark green background. So beautiful and interesting to look at!

Fashionably Warm Jackets

Anthropologie Oversized Wrap Puffer Jacket in Blue Fog

I love an oversized puffer jacket for those windy days and nights, but I also want to stay fashionable and non-bulky when wearing one. This Anthropologie online exclusive Oversized Wrap Puffer Jacket in Blue Fog from Avec Les Filles is so body flattering and at the same time offers shelter from the elements. I absolutely adore this powdery shade of blue, but it is also available in a bright “melt away the snow” shade of mango for $159.

Free People Snakeskin Fenix Vegan Jacket

As much as I was surprised to see turtlenecks make a comeback, I was equally as surprised to see snakeskin print return in a classy new way. Bringing “vintage” snakeskin print to this moto-style jacket is just brilliant! This Free People Snakeskin Fenix Vegan Jacket is just the thing to throw on when you are going out of the door in an LBD and heels or a t-shirt and jeans. It definitely serves the cool factor! This vegan baddie will set you back $198, but I feel that the print is subtle enough to carry you through more than one season.

The Perfect Jeans for Cold Weather

711 Skinny Warm Women's Jeans Dark Wash

I didn’t know that I needed another pair of jeans until I saw these from Levi’s. There is something a bit special about this particular pair of 711 Skinnys–they hold innovative technology to help keep your body heat in! How’s that for the perfect colder weather pair of jeans? I can’t wait to try these out with an oversized sweater or , hey, tuck in a turtleneck!

Lipstick for the Season

Bobbi Brown Luxe Shine Intense Lipstick in Bold Honey

Yes, there is a lipstick that looks good on just about anyone! I always opt for warmer and a bit darker shades when transitioning my summer makeup into fall. Since my lips tend to get dry in the colder months, I usually go for a lip color that adds a bit of moisture but provides rich color at the same time.

If you’ve tried lipstick by Bobbi Brown, you will know it feels luscious! I instantly fell in love with this glossy lip look using the Bobbi Brown Luxe Shine Intense Lipstick in Bold Honey. The slimline case is easy to slip into a clutch for nighttime or into your office bag for touchups.

A major lipstick staple in my fall collection is a fully pigmented liquid lipstick in a dark cherry or burgundy. I’ve recently become introduced to indie makeup brand Deck of Scarlet, and I am very impressed with their offerings. The brand offers monthly subscription-based makeup boxes, but you can buy their Deck of Scarlet Matte Velvet Lip Color in Sin separately for $23 each. This longwear formula will last you through wine tasting with the girls to a long day at the office.

No Prescription Needed to Combat Dry Skin

I can’t always find the time to see a facialist or fully pamper myself. In the colder months, my face looks and feels very dry, and this tends to age me quite a bit. If I don’t maintain my face, it definitely shows! A quick solution for those that want a spa-quality luxury mask that they only need to use once per week, then you’ve found the Nuvesse Deep Hydrating & Brightening Regimen Mask Kit.

What I love about these serum-infused masks is that they immediately plump my skin and leave my face soft and full of hydration. The kit includes a serum roller, made with the same stuff they put in the masks, that you can use to touch up with before your next mask. Brilliant! Another added bonus is that the masks are cruelty-free, paraben-free and gluten-free! Not full of any junk fillers. An entire month’s worth of mask treatments is $105, less than the price my facialst charges for one session.

In the Mood for Red

L’Oreal Paris Feria Power Red Hair Dye in R68

Changing my hair color to match my mood is something I practice often. I also love the richness of red hair in the fall sun, my favorite hair color to wear for the season. I don’t often find stunning red hair dye in my grocery store, but you can count on L’Oreal Paris Feria Power Red Hair Dye in R68 to deliver. This auburn brown shade isn’t too “Pennywise the Clown” red, but it is sure bright enough to turn heads. If you are daring to go red this season, give L’Oreal Feria’s Power Reds a try for $9.99.

Over the Moon for your NailsCiate London Geology Collection - Moondust

I am really picky about nail polish. I have to be very impressed with the quality and color in order to buy polish in a bottle. Since I already go in twice a month to a salon for gel color, it’s rare for me to find a shade so unique that it pulls me away from my precious gel polish. Ciate is THE brand that usually beckons my call for uniqueness and really cool shades. The latest collection to catch my eye is the Geology Collection, that features this amazing metallic shade called Moondust. This shade takes on a purple base with gold reflects–very multidimensional!

You can get your own intergalactic nail color from Ciate for $14.

The Only Eyeshadow Palette You’ll Need ColourPop Bye Bye Birdie Eyeshadow Palette

Boldly go where no eyeshadow has gone before! This very affordable Bye Bye Birdie 12-pan eyeshadow palette from ColourPop has everything you need to create beautiful bold looks, or subtle shimmery looks, depending on the occasion. I was most excited about the variety of textures you receive: matte, metallic, pressed glitter and their amazing and creamy Super Shock formula. You won’t need to use AfterPay for this gem as it is only $14.40.

Go for the Gold ShimmerFenty Gold Body Shimmer

I’ve been on a weight loss journey these past few months and all I can think about is being able to feel comfortable in form-fitting dresses on my birthday and on New Year’s Eve. One of my favorite secrets is to use a shimmering body gel or spray on the legs, arms, and across my chest to create an illusion of a slimmer body (that and a spray tan!). When I saw that Rihanna created the FENTY Beauty Body Lava Body Luminizer, I was delighted!

The product was created in the shade Trophy Wife, the same gold as Rihanna’s famous highlighter compact. Designed for all skin tones, this luminizer is going to be a bigger hit than the Thanksgiving turkey!

Halloween Makeup Ideas

Beautiful and spooky Halloween makeup ideas

If you are like me, you absolutely live for the month of October leading up to Halloween. I could definitely do without seeing the costume stores going up in August, but once October 1st hits, I’m ready for the spooky decor and inspiration for Halloween makeup ideas!

I browsed Instagram for the most beautiful and spookiest Halloween makeup looks that I could find. There is some amazing inspiration out there, and it just keeps getting better! Are you looking forward to trying some of these looks out?

MALEFICENT MAKEUP

Disney’s Maleficent is going to be a huge Halloween this year, and it looks like an easy look to achieve if you have the right tools and costume pieces. There are a couple versions of this look that will go over fantastic at your Halloween party this year: you can go classic Maleficent with a complete makeup kit from Party City, where they also sell the costume to go with it. They offer a 20% off coupon for orders over $35, which is an added bonus!

Morphe 9A Artistry Palette

If you are going for the Angelina Jolie version of Maleficent like you see in the photo above, you’ll need a makeup palette with several shades of contour colors and red lipstick. I suggest the Morphe 9A Always Golden Artistry Palette due to the fact that it has a variety of brown shades to create that deep cheekbone and a black shade. Plus, this palette will definitely not go to waste–those colors are very wearable for everyday looks.

ColourPop Evil Queen Lipstick

Now for that vixen red lip color! If you prefer liquid lipstick, I love the Jeffree Star Redrum Velour Liquid Lipstick, also available at Morphe. If a traditional tube of lipstick is up your alley, ColourPop released a lipstick, Evil Queen, as part of their Villians collection with Disney. What a perfect match!

You can watch the video tutorial on how @dressyourface did this Maleficent look right here!

Pennywise The Clown Makeup

Another popular Halloween look making the rounds on Instagram this month is Pennywise, the evil and horrifying clown from the movie IT. In fact, the look was being worn well before Halloween–some theaters banned costumes and clown makeup back in early September when the movie released. Since nobody is banning Halloween, we are free to let our Pennywise flags fly!

I am loving the more feminine take on the clown character’s makeup, and it seems a bit less scary if young kids are around. To get this look, you only need a few things: white clown makeup base, red lipstick or theatrical makeup crayon and black eyeshadow/mascara/eyeliner. Luckily, the Spirit Halloween Store sells complete Pennywise makeup kits, and they include adhesive parts to make it easy for the non-artsy people out there. The “I Love Derry” balloons not included!

Need a costume? This Pennywise women’s costume from Party City is by far the best one I’ve seen if you are going for a pretty evil clown look…if that’s even possible!

Harley Quinn Makeup

Our favorite female Suicide Squad vigilante, Harley Quinn, will make it back to the big screen come February 2020, and I am more than excited about it! It seems like I am not the only one that is excited. There are many interpretations of this character’s look, but I think the simpler, the better. There’s not much to it!

The artist that created the look in the photo above used the Morphe 35B Eyeshadow Palette, which is not apparently available in the US, and plus, do you really need a giant eyeshadow palette? Luckily, Morphe sells eyeshadow single pans for $2.50 each! You can choose Morphe’s Aquatic Earth eyeshadow color for your left eye look, and a stunning hot pink shade like Morphe’s Orchid eyeshadow single.

Take a look at my exact recommendation for red lipstick up where I spoke about the Maleficent makeup. It is definitely the same shade of red! The famous blue and pink Harley Quinn hair might be a little difficult, but thankfully wigs and colored hairspray exist! If you are looking for a less expensive “toss in the trash” wig, the Harley Quinn wig from Party City looks like it will get the job done. If you want to get serious about your Harley hair, then look for a lace front wig. A good synthetic one will set you back $120, but you will definitely stand out as having the best costume at your party!

As for costumes, you have several choices! The Party City choice is a bit sexy for an office or neighbor’s Halloween party, but the Rubie’s version requires your black yoga or stretch pants you already have to pull this top and jacket ensemble together.

The makeup look for Disney’s Princess Jasmine can be just about anything because this look is all about the accessories! I particularly like the makeup look shown in the photo above because it uses neutrals that you may already have at home, except some of us may not have a turquoise eyeshadow to use. I think the blue shadow gives the look at a more costumey vibe which is appropriate for Halloween, but I also think you could use alternatives such as blue or gold glitter on the bottom eyelid area. If you are more inclined to head to the drugstore for your Jasmine look, check out NYX Cosmetics Pigment Eyeshadow in Sea Foam, if that color doesn’t scream Princess Jasmine, I don’t know what else does!

As for costumes, the same rule goes for what I mentioned in the section about Harley Quinn–you can go super sexy Jasmine or tone it down for taking the kids trick-or-treating. The hair is very important to make the Jasmine look come alive–if you have naturally black long hair, you are blessed! If not, there are inexpensive wig options that won’t cost you your magic lamp.

As for the beautiful headpiece and jewelry ensemble, there are many gorgeous handmade Princess Jasmine pieces on Etsy right now.

WITCH MAKEUP

Now, for one of my favorites–the witch. This is simply the most fool-proof way to do Halloween and can be as simple as a witch hat and a black sweater. But, if you want to be 100% That Witch, then you will need some inspiration. I fell in love with this look in the photo above due to the neon green eyeshadow that stood out among 100 other photos on the same page. This eyeshadow look takes some major blending skill, but if you want to go simple, you can use the eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eyes or as a single color on the bottom lid. Now, keep in mind that the artist used a $60 palette for the eyeshadow look. You can find a similar neon palette on Amazon for $14–and it is rated 4.5 stars.

For the witchy symbols, you can use any liquid eyeliner and go wild. Stars, moons, freckles, you can do just about anything that matches your mood. Milk Makeup creates moon and stars stamps if you are in a hurry or don’t feel you have an artistic touch.

No matter what look you choose for Halloween night, make sure you are wearing something reflective if you plan on walking around in the dark seeking treats. I sound like a naggy mom, but it is all about safety first! Have a happy and safe Halloween!

NYFW Spring Summer 2020 Beauty Trends

Best makeup, hair and nail looks from NYFW 2020

It felt like summer was starting all over again when I browsed the runway looks from the recent NYFW 2020 shows. The bright blush, the citrine-hued nails, and the slicked back hairstyles looked like something ripped straight out of the 80s and early 90s Vogue magazines. Let’s take a look at my favorite wearable picks from backstage and on the NYFW 2020 Spring/Summer runway.

Fall-Inspired Smokey Eyes

I’m just going to dive into what my favorite look is out of the entire thing. I am such a fan of the smokey eye look but especially excited about the colors used on one of the models at the Marc Jacobs runway show. Each model was given their own unique makeup look, but this look above is what really caught my attention. Makeup looks were directed by none other than the legendary Pat McGrath, who had created 60 different makeup looks for the show, while hairstylist Guido Palau had just as tough of a job coming up with just as many hairstyles.

This wearable eye makeup look was created using the Marc Jacobs Beauty Eye-conic Multi-Finish Eye Palette in Glambition, which is going on my holiday wishlist right now!

During the Tommy x Zendaya Fall 2019 runway show, (yes, fall!) another sighting of beautiful warm bronze colors was worn by models such as Ashely Graham. This show was the most talked-about runway of the season–it took place at the Apollo Theater! Celeb makeup artist Sir John for Lancome created a “Daytime Disco” look inspired by Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall.

You can start wearing this look now! Here’s how to create the eye and lip look, according to Makeup.com:

Create a Smoky Eye

Trace along your waterline and top lash line with Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof in Noir and smudge Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof in Chocolat across the lower lash line. Define the crease and outer corners of the eyes with Lancôme Color Design Mono Eye Shadow in Henna and Embers. From the Lancôme Hypnôse Palette in Bois Corail, use the antique gold shade to light up the center of the lid.

Create Full Lashes and Strong Brows

Apply a coat of Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara in Black to your lashes. Fill in and strengthen your arches with Lancôme Brow Define Pencil.

Create the Perfect Lips for Fall

Using Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Cafe Noir for depth, fill in your lips and layer Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Ruby Cream Lipstick in Queen Ruby on top for richness.

Yes, faux freckles were a thing on the runway this season. Remember when this fad went big on social media earlier this year? It made its way to fashion week–but is this look for everyone? Not particularly. As someone who has struggled to fade their own freckles for decades, I don’t have any interest in drawing them back on! But, the people that can pull it off really look good as you can see in the example above from Brandon Maxwell’s 2020 runway show.

Using MAC’s Spellbinder eye shadow, which has a gunmetal metallic finish, makeup artist Tom Pecheaux created this look which is easy to achieve. Keeping brows natural a full, the eyeshadow is applied to the lid only with a few coats of mascara. A glossy nude lip and neutral blush keep the eyes at the center of attention.

Statement Lips

Beautiful simplicity is my idea of spring and summer makeup. Keeping the skin gorgeous and dewy while maintaining a healthy brow are the staple components of 2020’s beauty style. It’s going to be an iconic year, so why not wear an iconic red lip? The statement lip is going to be huge come next year.

Models’ skin at Prabal Gurung’s runway show was prepped with Whal Myung Korean skincare, and each model wore either a glossy lip balm, a black glossy lip, a red lip or a deep burgundy shade. The inspiration was “etherial girls with a feminine touch,” according to MAC artist Lousie Zizzo.

Statement Blush

As a forever fan of a liquid cat eye, I was thrilled to see that the cat-eye look isn’t dying out anytime soon. At Tadashi Shoji’s NYFW 2020 runway show, the look was inspired by lighter take on Harajuku girls’ style with a pop of yellow eyeliner on top of a blunt-edged black winged liner. A wash of bright pink blush was placed on the cheekbone with an upwards angle that lands near the corner of the outer eye edge. Lips were dabbed with sheer pops of glossy color.

The nail art was a standout for me. I loved the wavy lines pattern and red tips on the nails for this look.

Speaking of nails…

Nail Looks for 2020

Charme Nails from Jinsoon
Citrine Nails: JINSOON

Remember the lime green nail trend that happened this summer? The citrine nail trend for spring/summer 2020 is a refreshing and a bit more sophisticated take on that trend. Jin Soon Choi used the color Charme from her JINSOON nail color line at 3.1 Phillip Lim to create this beautiful look on the models’ nails.

French manicure from Essie

The white-tipped French manicure is back, and it’s not just for weddings anymore! Manicurist Betina Goldstein created these elegantly simple French tipped nails for KHAITE by using @essie sheer nude polish in Mademoiselle and lined the tips in Blanc, also from Essie.

If I could get married all over again, I would be sporting these pearl-tipped French manicured nails down the aisle. For Alice + Olivia’s runway show, KISS Lead Nail Artist Gina Edwards applied tiny pearls from the brand’s Nail Art Kit. Edwards applied these pearls to a set of KISS press-on nails, which I have been a fan of for a few years.

Slick Hair

Slick and sleek wet-looking hair is still a style that is going strong since the world fell in love with Kim Kardashian-West’s Met Gala look back in May. YouTuber Lana Summer makes the wet hairstyle technique look easy using a wig and some mousse! Above, you see a very wet hair look at Prabal Gurung, which can be achieved by using mousse with a shine serum applied on top for an extra slick look.

British celebrity hairstylist Guido Palau had a lot of troubles finding those old 1980s hair combs that he used for the Tory Burch runway show. He ended up spray painting the ones that he found to match the solid color combs that my mother wore every day of my childhood.

If the wet look isn’t your thing, you can try putting your hair back with these combs and a little mousse or a light hair gel to keep it all in place. You may have better luck finding these plastic combs at the dollar store than anywhere else unless you have better luck finding them than Guido did!
