That pesky hair that is growing out of your mole–you hate it and want it to die. But, can you get laser hair removal over a tattoo, moles, or over your freckles? The answers are not very complicated, but there are reasons why you have to use caution when performing at-home laser hair removal. Let’s take a look!
How does laser hair removal work?
First, we need to understand how laser hair removal works. In basic terms, the laser beam from a hair removal device targets the pigment in the hair follicle on freshly shaven skin. The only way that the laser can find the pigment is if the skin tone is lighter than the pigment color of the hair. If the skin is darker than the hair’s pigment, or if the hair color has little to no pigment in it, the laser cannot find the hair follicle–resulting in the laser not treating those hairs.
So, because a mole can be dark brown or black, the melanin (the natural skin pigment) competes with the color of the hair, resulting in the laser targeting the skin of the mole and not the hair. If the laser targets the pigment in the mole, it can cause a burn, remove the mole from the skin, and yes, it will probably be painful.
With this in mind, you can imagine that the laser will also target the ink pigment in your tattoos–with possible burns and accidental tattoo removal. You definitely do not want to experience that sensation! <!–more–>
How can you avoid burning moles and tattoos?
If you are afraid that you will accidentally target a mole or a tattoo, there is a simple solution to keep yourself safe! There are a couple of ways to cover your moles, but you can use a white pencil (like a white kohl eyeliner pencil) to draw on the mole so that the laser does not detect the melanin. You can also use a white circle sticker to place over the mole during treatment, and just treat around the sticker.
For tattoos, it is easy to place white medical tape on the border of your tattoos so that you don’t accidentally target the ink zones.
Are freckles safe to laser?
Yes! You can go over your beautiful sunkissed freckled skin without harm. We suggest taking a good look through your freckle constellation and making sure there are no raised moles or very dark moles that could be present. You can draw over those areas with the white kohl pencil just to be on the safe side. Then you are ready to go blast away those hair follicles!

It’s exciting to buy a new beauty gadget, especially an at-home laser hair removal device, and when you’re unboxing it, that’s when the real intrigue begins. These initial questions will most likely pop into your head: What will it do, and how fast? I’ve tried a lot of beauty gizmos, and 99.9% of them are not overnight sensations. It takes time and dedication to see results with any device, and it is all up to you to make the magic happen.
One of the most common questions asked by customers is: How often do I need to use your hair removal lasers? Sometimes we hear that customers are using our 4X Hair Removal Laser every day, thinking that doing so will speed up the results. Unfortunately, using our hair removal device daily will not do anything but waste the number of laser pulses contained within the laser. Let me explain how at-home laser hair removal works and why you can’t use it daily.
Your body hair must be in the anagen hair growth phase
It’s true. There is a reason why we suggest using our hair removal devices once every two weeks. The reason is that the hair follicle can only be ‘killed’ by the laser when your body hair is in the anagen hair growth phase. (Click that link to read all about hair growth phases and laser hair removal.) This is the growing phase of the hair and the only phase that laser hair removal will work on. Only 20% of your body hair is in this phase at any given time. This is why you need to treat the hairs multiple times over a period of at least three months, or 5-6 treatments. The anagen phase lasts 2-3 weeks and then goes into catagen, telogen and exogen when the hair falls out and starts a new growth phase all over again. <!–more–>
Since we want to catch the hair follicle in the anagen phase, we must treat every two weeks, without skipping a treatment day. It’s best to mark your calendar to make sure you don’t miss your date with the laser!
Use your laser pulses only when you need to
It’s good to keep in mind that both our Precision Hair Removal Laser and 4X Laser contain an internal rechargeable battery that hold about 90,000 laser pulses. While this is a lot of pulses, if you used the laser daily, you would still have to use the laser for several months to see the results you want. Conserve your laser’s battery by using it only once every two weeks, and you should be able to use the laser for 2-3 years with proper battery maintenance. Charging the battery at least once every three months helps keep the battery healthy.
Trust the process
It’s definitely worth the time and effort doing your own at-home laser hair removal. Once the hair follicles have been successfully treated with the laser, you most likely will not have to worry about hair growth for quite some time! It can take from 3 to 6 months to see full results, so it is important not to get frustrated and give up on your progress. Keep going! My favorite thing to do when treating larger areas, such as legs, is to put my feet up and turn on my favorite show and start blasting away those follicles. It doesn’t have to be a daunting task (at least you don’t have to wear protective glasses like you do when using IPL).

Growing up as a redhead, I could never understand why my body hair was dark brown on my legs, but it reddish-blonde everywhere else. I found myself shaving almost every other day just to rid my legs of the dark stubble that would creep back so quickly. At-home laser hair removal technology was not available when I was a teen, and I would have definitely taken advantage of it back then if it were!
Does laser hair removal work for everyone? The simple answer is no, but I will explain why and what options you have if it doesn’t work.
How laser hair removal works
The technology behind how laser hair removal devices work is pretty straightforward. The laser beam from a hair removal device targets the pigment in the hair follicle on freshly shaven skin. The only way that the laser can find the pigment is if the skin tone is lighter than the pigment color of the hair. If the skin is darker than the hair’s pigment, or if the hair color has little to no pigment in it, the laser cannot find the hair follicle–resulting in the laser not treating those hairs.
This type of diode laser technology means that certain skin tones and hair colors will not be affected by the treatment. White or grey hair, blonde and red hair do not have enough pigmentation for the laser to target. Since I have different colors of body hair, I can treat my legs and wherever the hair is light brown to black, but the hair that is red or blonde, I cannot treat. If your hair is light brown to black, and your skin tone is pale to light tan, you are a great candidate for at-home laser hair removal.
Hair Growth Phases
Your hair color and skin tone are not the only factors that come into play with laser hair removal. Each hair on your body is in a different hair growth phase, and this is very important for successful laser hair removal. Let’s take a look at each phase and what it means for laser.
This is the growing phase of the hair and the only phase that laser hair removal will work on. Only 20% of your hair is in this phase at any given time, which is why you need to treat the hairs multiple times over a period of at least three months, or 5-6 treatments.
This phase happens right after the anagen phase has ended. The hair follicle stops producing and the hair remains intact.
During this phase, the hair is in a resting period for about three months. While there is a small amount of hair in this phase (about 10-15%) laser hair removal is not successful in this stage.
This phase is when the hair falls out. We shed about 50 to 100 hairs all over our body per day–it’s totally normal!
Keep in mind that you cannot tell which phase each hair is in just by looking–that is a mystery that only your body knows about!
Will Tria Lasers Work for You?
The first step in deciding if Tria’s hair removal lasers will work for you is to take a look at the skin tone and hair color chart. The chart will guide you to make sure that your skin tone and hair color combination will work with diode laser technology.
As you can see here, the laser will work on pale to light brown skin tones, and only on black to light brown hair color. What could happen if your skin tone is darker than light brown and you used the laser? The answer is that the laser could target the skin instead of the hair and cause pain and damage. The great thing about the Tria at-home hair removal laser is that there is a safety feature on the device that only allows the laser to unlock when the skin tone is within a safe range.
You will still need to use precautions when using the laser over dark moles. You can purchase white circle stickers to place over the moles to make sure they will not get hit with the laser during treatments. Definitely avoid any tattoos!
What Type of Hair Removal Methods Work for Dark Skin?
The good news is that there are options for hair removal for those with dark skin tones. These options are available only in clinics and cannot be performed at home, so you will have to make an appointment and most likely go through a consultation first.
The Nd:YAG laser (also known as YAG) works by targeting the blood supply that is attached to the hair follicle. This laser works safely over darker skin tones as it does not target the melanin in the skin. Be prepared to go in for many sessions with this laser since the average sessions will be about 8 to 12 to achieve permanent results. As always, I remind you to do your research on the clinic you book–check reviews first! Depending on the area being treated, the average cost of these treatments are about $300 per session.
This method of hair removal will work on all skin tones and hair colors — this will work on blondes with light body hair and redheads! Electrolysis is highly effective technology, but there are some drawbacks that I’d like to mention when choosing this option. Unlike laser, this method works by manually placing a wire into the hair follicle underneath the skin. An electric current moves down the wire to destroy the hair follicle.
The person performing the procedure must be a licensed or certified electrologist that has a valid license to work within your state. It can take 8 to 18 months to see full permanent results with about 2-4 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart. A common side effect in those with darker skin tones is Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation that can take up to a year to fade. I also want to mention that electrolysis can be painful, even with numbing creams applied.

One of my favorite features of the 4X is that it is cordless. It seems simple enough, but most hair removal devices on the market are corded, which means you do not have the freedom to use them wherever you want. During one of my Facebook Live events, my guest was using her Tria 4X outdoors to treat the hair on her legs, and it looked like a very relaxing experience! I don’t know about you, but I always prefer a screen on a device that allows me to see important information such as battery life. When you turn the 4X Laser on, you can see how much battery power is left, the power level, and how many ‘shots fired’ you have completed during your session. The latter is essential to me to track progress. For instance, if I am doing my legs and I use 300 zaps one month, and the next month I use 200, that means I have less hair to zap! This is usually a good indicator to let you know that your treatments are working!
Laser Won’t Unlock Unless it’s Safe
Safety is a priority at Tria–did you know our lasers are FDA-Cleared? In the early 2000s, Tria conducted tests to ensure that the laser was safe for use at home and which body zones were the safest to treat. A feature was introduced to ensure that the laser was safe to use on a particular area utilizing a little red light on the bottom of the device. For instance, I had a customer tell me that after a summer vacation of tanning on the beach, her Tria 4X device would not unlock. This is because if your skin tone is darker than the light brown shade shown on the left chart, the laser will not detect the hair follicle, and there is a risk of burn.
Try to remember that if you have tanned during the summer or used a self-tanner, utilize the safety unlocking feature to ensure that the areas you are treating are safe. I will simply turn off the device and back on again when moving on to another area of my body and have the device test the area I am about to treat.
Tria’s Lasers Are True Diode Lasers
Here’s one that creates mass confusion–are Tria’s lasers IPL or laser technology? There is an entire blog post about What is the difference between Laser Hair Removal and IPL? Simply said: IPL is a big, broad flash of light (hence why you need to wear annoying goggles during treatments), and it is not as targeted as a diode laser. Don’t let the word ‘laser’ fool you when you see ads on YouTube and Google when the device advertised is really just IPL. Five Power Levels for Comfort
It is true that the higher the power level setting is set on the 4X, the faster the results will be. For a lot of us, we need to power down a bit in order to feel comfortable. Personally, I can handle level 3 on my face, but I can power up to 5 for other areas, such as my legs. The fact that you can choose your power level to accommodate certain body parts is wonderful! You have 5 levels to choose from on the 4X, and you can definitely use a level 1 to start out with and work your way up as you start losing hair or get used to the sensation. The denser the hair is in a particular area, the more you will feel the power! Always start out with level 1 when treating an area you haven’t treated before to see how it feels, then work your way up.

In today’s laser hair removal device market, we see ads for at-home laser hair removal devices when most of the devices advertised are not even laser at all! There is a mass amount of “laser” hair removal devices you see on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Most of these devices use a technology called IPL – which’s short for Intense Pulsed Light. In layman’s terms… that’s not a laser!
Tria is the only FDA-cleared at-home hair removal laser available on the market and uses the same diode laser technology used by dermatologists and laser hair removal clinics. But how do Tria’s lasers compare with those of the IPL variety, and how is laser more effective for permanent hair removal? Let’s take a deeper dive into the technology, shall we?
What is laser hair removal?
While both IPL and laser hair removal methods use light to heat the hair follicles to prevent regrowth, the technology is different due to the light source used. With laser, a pulse of focused light targets the pigment in the hair, and the energy from that light converts to heat which then disables the hair follicle underneath the skin. This process helps stop future hair growth, but it doesn’t happen overnight.
Since each hair on the body is in a different growth phase, your hair growth will need to be in the anagen hair growth phase for permanent hair removal. This is why lasering at home can take between 3 to 8 sessions or more to see results over 2 to 6 months when performed once every two weeks with Tria’s lasers. Consistency and patience is the key to achieving long-term results. If you miss a session doing laser in the areas you are targeting, you will have to wait longer to see the results you were hoping for.
Who is laser hair removal for?
Laser hair removal is not suitable for all skin tones or hair colors. Since there must be a contrast between the skin color and the hair color, the laser works best on pale to light brown skin tones with light brown to black hair color. The laser will not work on grey, blonde or red body hair. Even if you do artificial tanning, such as using a spray tan or tanning bed, you will need to wait until your tan fades before using the laser. Tria’s laser will not unlock if your skin and hair color are not suitable–this is a safety feature to keep skin from any injuries.
Another factor to take into consideration when deciding on laser hair removal is hormones. The most common reason why women grow thick facial hair is due to ahormonal disorder called PCOS. Laser will work to help control the hair growth, but it will not permanently remove it, resulting in long-term use of laser for the face.

What is IPL hair removal?
IPL technology, which is different from laser technology, uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths to target pigment in the hair. The energy is not as focused as a laser, as you can see in the diagram above, causing the energy to be much weaker than Tria’s diode lasers. This means you will need more treatments and will most likely see less permanent results. When it comes to safety, IPL can be concerning since the beam of light emitted covers a large area of skin surrounding the hair, increasing your chances of skin and tissue damage.
If we look at this chart here that compares Tria’s hair removal lasers with at-home IPL devices, we see that Tria uses 20 Joules (a unit of energy) and delivers 3X more energy than leading IPL hair removal devices.
Now that we’ve covered the technology portion of IPL vs. Laser, let’s talk about the machine’s body and why Tria is easier to use than an IPL device.
Tria’s lasers are cordless and do not require you to be tethered to the wall during treatments like IPL devices. You can enjoy the outdoors, lounge on the bed or couch, or use it anywhere you want!
