Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System?
The TRIA System is the first safe, effective, FDA-cleared laser hair removal system available for at-home use.
2. How does the TRIA laser compare to professional systems?
The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System uses the same technology and power levels as professional diode lasers used by physicians, which have been shown in clinical research to deliver permanent hair reduction.
TRIA Beauty’s team of scientists invented professional diode laser technology back in 1993. Today, this same technology is still recognized as the gold standard by physicians. With the development of the TRIA System, these scientists not only perfected the technology, they modified it so it is safe for home use.
Now you can enjoy the benefits of real professional-quality laser hair removal in the privacy, comfort, and convenience of your own home.
3. Is TRIA technology new?
No. The diode laser technology that the TRIA laser uses was developed by TRIA Beauty's co-founders in 1993. The diode laser is now recognized as the gold standard in technology for light-based therapeutic beauty devices and is currently used by physicians who perform in-office laser hair removal treatments.
4. What is Diode laser technology? How does the TRIA System work?
Laser hair removal is based on the principles of selective photothermolysis. This is a process by which diode laser energy targets the dark pigment in the hair follicle, where the light energy is absorbed and transformed into thermal energy (heat). This energy heats the hair follicle to such a degree that it disables the hair follicle (the source of life for each hair on the body) and causes the hair to gradually fall out. The TRIA laser features a patented form of this technology called Diffuse Radiance Technology™ that takes coherent light and scatters it. This unique technology is what makes the TRIA device a safe Class I laser rather than a dangerous Class IV laser.
5. Does the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System really work?
You have our word. When used as directed, the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System provides clinically proven, easy, safe, effective, laser hair removal results in the privacy, comfort, and convenience of your own home. TRIA's clinical results show that with less than one-quarter of the recommended treatment cycle completed, patients achieved and maintained a 33% reduction in hair growth for 12 months (1 year) after the last treatment.
6. Are results immediate?
Results are not immediate because hair grows in cycles.
During any one treatment cycle, some hair follicles will be dormant and cannot be seen (a kind of sleep state) and some will grow and be visible (the growth cycle), so every hair cannot be treated at the same time. To benefit from laser treatment, the hair must be in the growth cycle during treatment (not in the dormant stage). In addition, once the hair follicle is treated and disabled, it continues to work to eject the hair that was under the surface of the skin. This process takes up to 2 weeks to complete, during which time it will appear as if the hair is still growing when it is actually the treated hair being "pushed out" of the follicle.
For optimal results, we recommend a complete treatment course of at least 6-8 treatments over a 6-8 month period. This timing is based on the average amount of time it takes the majority of the hair follicles to move through an entire growth cycle and be treated. Be patient - the results are worth the wait.
7. After I complete the entire course of treatments, will I be 100% hair-free?
Maintaining a silky, smooth result requires occasional spot treatment of stray hairs that either were not treated during the initial 6-8 treatments or were dormant during this time.
8. How safe is the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System?
The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System was designed with your safety in mind. When used as directed, the TRIA System is clinically proven to be safe and effective. To ensure your safety after purchase, we ask that you call our toll-free number: 1-877-321-TRIA(8742) or log onto www.TRIABeauty.com to confirm your suitability with the TRIA system and to activate the TRIA laser.
9. How do I know if the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System is right for me?
The TRIA System is designed for use on individuals with light to medium skin tones and dark hair. Safe skin tones include white, ivory, tan, beige, and light brown only. Safe hair colors (natural, not dyed) include black, dark brown, and medium brown.
In addition, we've included our proprietary TRIA skin sensor (included with your purchase) so you can test each area on the body you intend to treat for suitability, prior to each treatment.
*If your skin is medium brown, dark brown, or black, or your hair color is light brown; light, medium, or dark blond; red or gray, at this time the TRIA System is not right for you. Lastly, regardless of skin tone, DO NOT use the TRIA system if you are African-American, East Indian, Native American, or Pacific Islander as skin damage may occur.
10. Why can't I use the TRIA System if I have medium to dark brown skin?
The TRIA laser is designed to react with the dark pigment of the hair. As a result, dark brown and black skin may absorb too much of the laser's energy (heat), which can cause skin damage. The TRIA laser's Skin Sensor will detect if your skin tone is too dark for safe treatment. If your skin tone is too dark, the TRIA Skin Sensor will not unlock the TRIA laser.
11. My hair used to be black, but now it's gray. Will the TRIA System work for me?
Not at this time. Because TRIA's laser is activated by darker shades of melanin (color) levels in the hair, lighter hair colors such as light brown; light, medium, or dark blond; red or gray will not absorb enough of the laser's energy to disable the hair follicle.
12. Where can the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System be used?
The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System can be used on the legs, underarms, bikini line, back, chest, abdomen, arms, hands, or feet, or anywhere that's suitable below the neck.
13. Can I use the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System on my face?
Not at this time. Currently, the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System is not cleared for use on the face, head, ears, or neck, but we are hard at work on additional research to safely treat these areas - backed by FDA clearance, of course.
14. Is there any discomfort from using the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System?
While some experience discomfort, ranging from a warm, prickling sensation to the feeling of a rubber band lightly snapping against the skin, others experience no discomfort at all.
The amount of discomfort can depend on the density of the hair that’s being treated, so be sure to begin your treatment with a super-close shave.
If you experience discomfort when using the TRIA System, keep going! The good news is that the discomfort will decrease as quickly as the hair in the treated area decreases.
The TRIA System has three energy levels. For best results, select the level that is closest to your highest level of tolerance and increase the level as your tolerance increases.
15. Are there any side effects associated with the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System?
The most common side effect reported is temporary redness after treatment.
16. Where can the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System be purchased?
The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System is available at leading aesthetic physicians' offices nationwide, as well as at Bergdorf Goodman (New York City), The Studio at Fred Segal (Santa Monica, CA), and select Bliss Spas. The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System along with the most up-to-date listing of our retailers is also available at www.TRIABeauty.com.
17. How popular is professional laser hair removal?
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, laser hair removal is the leading nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for women 34 and under, and the third most popular nonsurgical procedure for women 35 and over.
18. What is the cost of the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System compared with in-office laser hair removal treatments?
Based on national averages, a woman can expect to spend between $3,000 to $10,000 to remove unwanted hair from underarms, bikini line, and legs over a 10-year period by using various methods. The average physician's fee for a series of 3 to 8 laser treatments can range between $1,050 and $2,800 for each body area. The suggested retail price for the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System is $995.
19. Why does the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System cost $995?
Each TRIA Laser Hair Removal device is handmade, numbered and signed by it's assembler in TRIA's on-site lab in Pleasanton, CA. It takes up to 5 days to build, test, and release a TRIA device prior to placing it in your hands. In addition, each TRIA device is equipped with a pure, jewel-grade, single crystal sapphire tip to protect the skin from excessive heat as the laser treats each hair follicle. When compared with other means of professional hair removal, you can expect a savings upward of $1,000 to $3,000 with the purchase of a TRIA Laser Hair Removal System - while achieving the same great results.
20. Can the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System be used in conjunction with in-office laser hair removal?
Absolutely. The TRIA Laser Hair Removal System can be used in conjunction with professional treatments to maintain in-office results.
