range of industries including: laser technology, financial services,
healthcare, beauty, and personal care.
In addition to President/CEO Kevin Appelbaum, our Board of Directors includes:
Albert Cha, M.D., Ph.D.
Managing Partner, Vivo
- Albert is a Managing Partner who invests in private and public
biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. He draws on extensive
scientific, medical, and operating experience when working with his
portfolio companies.
- Albert was an early investor in Aspreva Pharmaceuticals
(NASDAQ: ASPV, acquired by Galenica), Bioform Medical (BFRM, acquired
by Merz), Vicept Therapeutics (acquired by Allergan), and Biodel
(BIOD). Other investments include Acura Pharmaceuticals (ACUR), AMAG
Pharmaceuticals (AMAG), and Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR). He currently
serves on the board of several private biopharmaceutical and medical
device companies. Albert has also served as co-founder of several
portfolio companies. Prior to joining Vivo, Albert worked at Oracle
Corporation in pharmaceutical consulting and at the Palo Alto VA
Hospital as a biomedical engineer.
- Albert received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering
from Stanford University. He subsequently completed the Medical
Scientist Training Program at UCLA School of Medicine, where he
received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience. During his studies, he was
elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and won the prestigious Outstanding
Graduate Student Award. His research in molecular biophysics has been
published in highly respected journals such as Nature and Neuron.
Steven A. Elms
Managing Partner, Aisling Capital
- Steven joined Aisling Capital in mid-2000 and currently serves
as a Managing Partner. Previously, he was a Principal in the Life
Sciences Investment Banking Group of Hambrecht & Quist (H & Q). During
his five years at H & Q, Steven was involved in over 60 financing and
M&A transactions, helping clients raise in excess of $3.3 billion in
capital. Prior to H & Q, he traded mortgage-backed securities at
Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. His previous healthcare sector experience
includes over two years as a pharmaceutical sales representative for
Marion Laboratories and two years as a consultant for The Wilkerson
Group. Steven currently serves as a director of Pernix Therapeutics,
Inc. (AMEX: PTX) and a number of private companies.
- Steven earned an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of
Management at Northwestern University and a B.A. in Human Biology from
Stanford University.
Jim Glasheen
General Partner, Technology Partners
- Jim has been with Technology Partners since 2002. He leads the
firm's efforts in Consumer Medicine, investing in both medical device
and biopharmaceutical companies.
- Jim serves on the boards of Elcelyx Therapeutics, Essentialis,
Incline Therapeutics, Medley Health, Revance Therapeutics, Transcend
Medical, and TRIA Beauty, while also having led Technology Partner's
investment in two companies that have since gone public: Iomai (IOMI)
and Cadence Pharmaceuticals (CADX). Jim is also an advisor to the
Lester Center at the University of California, Berkeley and the
National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington, DC.
- Previously, Jim was Managing Director at CIT Venture Capital,
leading the Group's effort in Life Science investing. Also, he was a
leader within McKinsey & Company's Pharmaceutical and Medical Products
Practice.
- Jim earned a B.S. from Duke University and an M.A. and Ph.D.
in Biology from Harvard University. He was a Deutsche Akademische
Austauschdienst (DAAD) fellow at Universitaet des Saarlandes, Germany
and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.
Jim has published several research papers and has had his research
highlighted in major media outlets, including: Nature, The New York
Times, Scientific American, and CNN.
David Mauney, M.D.
Managing Director, De Novo Ventures
- David is one of the co-founders of De Novo Ventures, a
distinguished healthcare investment firm. Prior to co-founding De Novo,
David was a Partner at Asset Management Company (AMC), where he worked
with Pitch Johnson as the lead partner in healthcare investments. At
AMC, he led seed and early stage investments in TriVascular (acquired
by Boston Scientific), Novare Surgical Systems (licensed to Johnson &
Johnson), Enteric Medical Technologies (acquired by Boston Scientific),
and participated in seven financings of technology companies.
- David was the first employee and Director of Business
Development for Fox Hollow Technologies (Nasdaq: EVVV) and worked in
product management for Heartport (acquired by Johnson & Johnson). David
sits on the boards of Articulinx, ProMed, Simpirica, TRIA Beauty, and
Ventus Medical. He also represented De Novo on investments in
CyroVascular and Lumend.
- David earned an M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School and a B.A. from Duke University.
Michael J. Valentino
Independent Director
- Michael has spent 30+ years as a healthcare industry
executive. He built the start-up Adams Respiratory Therapeutics into a
fully integrated specialty pharmaceutical company with more than $400
million in annual revenue. Adams completed its initial public offering
(IPO) in July 2005, which was ranked by The Wall Street Journal as the
No. 1 Health Care IPO in 2005. In 2007, Reckitt Benckiser, a world
leader in household products, acquired Adams for $2.3 billion.
- Built start-up Adams Respiratory Therapeutics into a fully
integrated specialty pharmaceutical company with more than $400 million
in annual revenue; Adams completed its initial public offering (IPO) in
July 2005, which was ranked by The Wall Street Journal as the No. 1
Health Care IPO in 2005, and in 2007 was acquired by Reckitt Benckiser,

- Michael served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of
Directors for Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and President and Chief
Operating Officer at Alpharma, Inc., a leading global generic
pharmaceutical company. Additionally, he served as Executive Vice
President, Global Head Consumer Pharmaceuticals for Novartis, President
and Chief Operating Officer of Novartis Consumer Healthcare, North
America, and President of Pharmacia & Upjohn's Consumer Products.
Edward W. Unkart
Independent Director
- Edward was appointed to the Board of TRIA Beauty in February
2011 and chairs the audit committee. Since January 2009, he has been an
independent consultant. From January 2005 to December 2008, he served
as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial
Officer, and Assistant Secretary of SurgRx, Inc., which was acquired by
Johnson & Johnson in October 2008. From May 2001 until May 2004, Edward
served as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial
Officer, and Assistant Secretary of Novacept, which was acquired by
Cytyc Corporation in March 2004. In addition to TRIA Beauty, Edward
currently serves on the board of directors and chairs the audit
committee of AlterG, Inc., a privately held medical device company.
- Edward is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a B.S. in Statistics and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
